This is such a REAL shot, know what I mean?  This one little expression, this look…it sells the whole idea of the “good” Laura Palmer, the regular girl.  (Of course I know the filming of the picnic tape was a big part of David Lynch wanting to bring Sheryl Lee on as more than just a dead body, but…)
At the same time, there’s something a little brittle in her smile, a sign, a warning that she could break at any moment.

The picnic video is so great because it makes my heart hurt because it’s like it’s Laura just being Laura for once…like there was one moment not long before her death when she just gave in to the “Good Laura” again and was a happy, goofy teenager again.
